Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of synthetic organic chemicals that were widely used in electrical and industrial applications for decades. Commonly found in transformers, capacitors, heat transfer systems, rail cars, and certain coatings, PCBs were valued for their stability, low flammability, and ability to effectively insulate and maintain electrical currents.
While these properties made PCBs highly useful, they also present serious environmental and health concerns. PCBs do not break down easily and can persist in the environment for long periods. Over time, exposure has been linked to a range of health risks, making their proper management critical.
PCBs were banned in the U.S. in 1979 under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Although production stopped, EPA regulations still allow small amounts to be unintentionally created during certain manufacturing processes. These inadvertently generated PCBs (iPCBs) are only permitted at specific concentration levels and must meet strict conditions, including reporting to the EPA and maintaining proper records.
In demolition and asset recovery projects, identifying and handling PCB-containing equipment is an essential step. This includes safely removing PCB oils, fluids, and contaminated components in accordance with strict environmental regulations. Proper disposal not only protects workers and surrounding communities but also ensures compliance with federal and state guidelines.
At J&P Electrical, our team is experienced in managing PCB-related materials during electrical teardowns and plant cleanouts. We prioritize safety, environmental responsibility, and regulatory compliance on every project—helping clients navigate complex requirements while minimizing risk.
